Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

I've read such great things about SHADOW SHELTER.  I'd love to get it but there's no walkthrough.  And when you said there were very few instructions  that made it a no go for me stusue.

Anki started a new job?  How did I miss this?  How did I miss that she was even looking?  Congrats Anki!

I think I now have two in the queue courtesy of Stusue.

Stusue - I hope your mum does well, I know radiation can be very tiring at any age.  I know it was  taxing for my mom.  I hope it turns out as well for her as it did mine. How is your sister doing on her return home?  Has she recuperated fully from her fall?

Oscar, I'm glad I can be of some little help.    Which is the other game you have  lined up?

My mum had a mastectomy followed by radiation 2 years ago but now they've found a large growth that's growing - so aggressive - on her lung.  So now back to radiation.  The growth isn't lung cancer but breast cancer, which must have grown out of the breast tissue before she had the mastectomy.  However, the full-body scan also showed a possible, very small hotspot on one rib, which is a worry as the first place breast cancer spreads to is bone.

But Wendy, my mum's in Sydney with the rest of my family and I live in Germany, so I can't do much for her; it mainly rests with my sister who was just here, as my older brother and sister don't help or do anything; they hardly ever even ring to see how Mum's going!  But I'll be back there for 4 or 5 months later in the year so can help her than.  I just have to try and get well enough to travel, as well as find the money for the trip.  But at the moment Mum's fine; the radiation just knocks her around a bit and she gets really, really tired, which is difficult when she's 89 and lives on her own and totally looks after herself; she always refuses help and doesn't really need any, normally.  She only gave up work 2 years ago when she got breast cancer and was so tired after the mastectomy.

As for my sister, who's always there for my mum (even though they live on opposite sides of the harbour, about an hour apart) she's in so much pain and having so much trouble walking that she's wondering how on earth she's going to keep going.  She already has really bad arthritis spread throughout every bone/joint in her body and is already on really strong pain killers 24/7 so she can at least live some sort of normal life.  But now, after the fall, she's really done some damage and the pain's getting worse and worse, so she's going to get a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon and see if he can do anything to get her some relief from the constant pain.

Once again, thanks, everyone, for all your warm wishes for my family.  I always pass your kind words on to my mum and sister and they always love hearing that so many others are thinking of them and wishing them well.  And they always ask me to thank you all for them.  So thank you.

Lily, I strongly suggest you at least demo Shadow Shelter to see if you like it.  There's no walkthrough, that's true, but there's a jump map that shows where there are things to do.  The Help button only tells you that there's nothing for you to do if there are no actions available in that scene.  However, then you just use the jump map if you're not sure where to go and then the Hint button will show you exactly what you have to do if you don't already know.

But it's pretty intuitive as, once you're in a room and you've done everything that's possible to do there, you'll more often than not know exactly where you have to use all the inventory items you've just collected, and there's only one mansion to traipse over, so there's some back and forth but never a lot of scenes.  You find "keys" as you go along that have to be charged (and that's fun) when you also get a bit more of the backstory.  As you find the keys, more and more doors are opened for you to search.  I got to know the mansion really, really well, as I prefer not to use jump maps but to experience the action as I would if I were actually there.

You just have to make sure to look in every single dark corner of the room as there are things to pick up all over the place that you can hardly see.  But the cursor changes into a hand so you'll know there's something to pick up.  You also  have to make sure you go to each edge of the screen to find all the exit points as I couldn't find the music room (which eventually led to other rooms) as I hadn't moved my cursor to the left of the screen at the bottom of the stairs.

So, with the jump map that shows where actions are awaiting, the Hint button, and me (as long as you play it soon so that I don't forget everything, as some actions aren't all that obvious),  you shouldn't have any problems.

Sue,  Blessings to you and your family at this difficult time.  Your Mum is obviously a most remarkable woman.  When I resent my various infirmities and feel sorry for myself,  I remember people I admire who are even much older:  Burt Goldman,  who embarked on several
new careers in his 70's;  Betty White,  whom you know,  & is still working at 90;  Louise Hay ,  who started a publishing ciompany & began writing books at around 70,  is now 88.  I just saw, in her newsletter,  a picture of her in her vegetable garden.  And now your mother:  she will be in my prayers.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

I have finished Christmas Griddlers. I enjoyed the music. I like all nanograms.
I have  also finished  The Others. Not so fun, barely OK. The female VO was annoying!

I feel a bit sorry for myself  2 of the games I bought last week were rather bad...

With everything going on,  I don't know if anyone even noticed my little recommendation  of the new "Viking Saga."   But,  in case I inspired someone to try it,  I feel I should add a disclaimer.  I still love the game,  but any arachnophobes should be warned--there are at least two  (so far)  levels you won't like!!
I also got the new   "Gardens Inc.,"  which is fun
