I have watched them both on PBS and the UK version DVDs ( I have them all). Imo there is no difference other than how it was aired time slot wise. I don't believe there was anything added. So you won't be missing anything by buying the UK version DVD. jmo though.

barre- here's where I read about the dvd's. Apparently if you search youtube, you can find the added scenes.
Downton Abbey seems to be the exception to the rule. Usually PBS gets programs from the BBC, and scenes are edited out (by the supplier, NOT by PBS) to make the show fit the time slot. At first, the PBS version was also the dvd version, but enough people complained and now the dvd's are sold with the removed material added back in, which is why I wait to get the dvds from Netflix rather than watch the abridged versions on PBS. I wonder if the clamoring for the British versions of other shows led to the decision to no longer offer the PBS version of Downton Abbey.

Tirama and Oscar, thank you so much for your comments. I think I'll just get the PBS version which is much cheaper than the UK version right now.
