Re: Finish your games challenge - 2015

So BZ is TOTALLY out of the HOPA business?  Just mobile games now?  And I really don't understand how games conceived and developed by BZ can be the intellectual property of BFG.  But I really don't understand much about computers or the gaming business.  I guess I should check out the BZ Forums.  Although they've never been overly informative.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2015

I would assume BFG does the major part of the bankrolling as producers.  Maybe?

I started The Emptiness last night.  It is quite a different kettle of fish and I like it.  There has only been one little heart pit pat moment for me so. Far, lol but many for poor Tank.  The sound effects are pretty awesome and when that thunder cracks the room shakes and the poor bugger sits right up and hides under the desk.  I'm finding the puzzles fun as well as the little riddles.  It's quite neat how yo have to look at things from different perspectives.  From some angles you can see the letters others nope.  You really have to stop and look. Big two thumbs up from me.  But if you don't like to be scared or startled, skip it, there are many moments.  The diary has a portion called purpose and it really is true to life and in the game there are many telling moments in the decisions you make.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2015

For some developers BF is merely the distributer (they just sell the games), but for others they are also the publisher, which appears to mean they are much more involved in the producing of the game.  Each developer will have a contract and these will vary from  dev to dev, but here's some comments from the CEO of Eipix (BF publishes Eipix games and did publish BoomZap's games).  My comments about each comment will be the bits in parentheses.

If there were not for Big Fish we would still be a 3 man studio and hungry at that. Not glorifying anybody just saying that for independent devs life is HARD, and having a big publisher support you can really mean the difference between success and going bust.  (So I'd have to say that BF does bankroll some of their partner developers significantly.  A co-owner of BZ had repeatedly stated that not all publishers are the same and that BF is one of the top publishers.)

I would personally like to work with every customer to try to fix their problem, but there is the legal matter of what happens if the user creates some problems with his/her computer while trying to fix the game or send us data, which is why we are advised never to directly help customers in this way.  (I wonder just how much trouble it caused between BF and BZ when BZ was allowing people to submit problems with FTP games directly to BZ.)

Just had a meeting with Big Fish and it looks like Final Cut is here to stay. We might be actually accelerating that franchise a bit so you can expect more than just Final Cut 3 starting from early next year.  (So it appears that BF has some say in which games a developer works on)

A co-owner of BoomZap remarked that it cost upward of 1 million dollars to make a CE quality HOPA.  When you look at how many games each major developer is making each year, you know that they have to be getting funding from some outside source.

That source is BF and I'm guessing that the developers sign over the intellectual properties rights in exchange for that funding. And that means that if BF chooses, we could see another developer continuing some or all of the BoomZap series.

I've also read on the BF blogs that BF meets with its partner developers and does sometimes suggest storylines and does offer some other creative input.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2015

Here's more from the CEO of Eipix in respinse to somebody wanting them to sell their games through Artifex Mundi.

As a matter of fact Artifex are a very good friend of mine and our company. I even wrote music for a few of their games myself. When we signed the deal with BFG, Artifex did not have an option to sell our games and as the deal is a long term exclusive you understand why we can't do it now. That said, I honestly think that no one out there can give us better terms than BFG, and when I say that I mean that very subjectively. We are a large team and want to make many, many games in 2014, and BFG is one of the rare companies which is financially capable of sustaining that.

And:
Developers don't always agree with their publishers, but more often than not we live on their budgets.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2015

That's interesting, Tirama, on the inner workings of the gaming industry.

oscar...I thought The Emptiness was really good too.  There is plenty of help in the forum for this game in case you get stuck.  You might even see my help request from way back when I was playing and was answered by locojet.  I can just picture Tank listening to all the sounds and hiding out under the desk.

I finished Sable Maze: Sullivan River CE.  Once I started playing I realized that I played this one before, but since I started it, I figured that I would finish it.  It was pretty good for a older game 9/2012. As freyasmom would say it was heavily colored with a blue crayon, but the story was pretty good and lasted all the way to the end of the game.  The graphics were clear and the VO were good.   I have not played any of the other Sable Maze games yet.

teeitup...I was this close (...) in buying a Veronica Rivers game.  Now I am glad I didn't get it.

Tirama -- WOW!! Thanks for all that info about DEVS and producers (ie BFG).  I do sort of wish BFG would produce their own games (MCF & HE) again, but Eipex seems to have done pretty well with the HE games.

oscar -- awww poor Tank!  Just how big a desk do you have that he can get under it?

sunshinej -- I have 2 Veronica Rivers games -- both unplayed.  I'm hoping you didn't get one because they were too easy.  That would be a game I'd like.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2015

lilyr -- considering the star ratings that the last 2 MCF games developed by BF received, I'm glad they got Elephant Games to make the newer ones.  I will never play Escape from Ravenhearst (3.6 star rating)  a 2nd time, it was just too gross, and didn't even bother buying Shadow Lake (2.6 star rating).

People seem to complain when a different developer takes over a series, but they tend to compare the newest game with the BEST the previous developer produced and forget how dissatified they had become with the later games in the series.  For instance, the Dark Parable games.  Eipix might not be Blue Tea, but in the later games, Blue Tea didn't sem like Blue Tea to me.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2015

Well I did succumb to the sale and picked up 7 games.  Now I discovered I have to coupons to use tomorrow and Friday.  I'm not sure if there was a bonus punch but it doesn't really matter at this point.  I'm not sure what I'll use them on.  The 7 I got were CEs.

I'm still working on the fourth word in The  Emptiness.  I have to look around for that saw blade. Also I'm on the last room of the Christmas Gizmos.  If we don't see a new one soon I'll just start the original one again when I'm done.

I'm sitting in the dealership waiting for my car to be serviced and I could really use a nap.  I'm so tired.  I left the fellas workin on the bathroom getting the floor prepped.  Fingers crossed I go home and the new floor is down and the tub in.  I put Tank out in my bunkie when I left.  It is really nice and cool in their or he can go upstairs and sleep in the nice big lazy boy up there.  I didn't want to leave him in the yard in case they needed to go in and out and left the gate open.  I love my new floor tiles!  I'm really thinking about getting some prices to run water and possibly gas to my bunkie, put in a bathroom and kitchen and rent it out.  It is electric heat at the moment and expensive.

Tirama -- You're right about the series.  I didn't even (and won't) buy EFR based on the comments about how gross it was.  And a lot of other people had the same conclusion about Blue Tea.  I guess I was just nostalgic for the "good old days".

oscar -- fins crossed the floor and tub are in.

No, nothing like that lilyr.  It was at a 1/2 off developer sale and saw that I didn't have these two Veronica Rivers that were listed and debated if I should get them.  Almost decided that I would and backed out at the last moment, because I didn't want to spend even more money than I already was in the sale.

I started Myths of the World: Spirit Wolf.  I'm trying to remember if I ever played a game with a Native American theme before and don't think I ever had.  Anyone know of a game?

Is anyone else having troubles with upper back pain?  I just know it is computer related and my posture is starting to become slouchy.  Makes it difficult to be comfortable at the computer.
