It sure sounds like you played Mystery of Mortlake Manor lilyr.  You are describing it perfectly.

I am almost done with it.  There are 6 gates that you need to open up and I am finding the ingredients for the last gate now.

I finished Mystery of Mortlake Manor.  I'm glad I stuck with it because it was very good.  It also was a very long length, longer than some CE's.  Since there is 13 days left in month I am going to add another oldie.  Next up Robinson Crusoe and the Cursed Pirates bought 4./17/11

Congrats sunshinej!  I finally found MORTLAKE MANOR in my purchase history and I DID play it.  For some unknown reason the "MYSTERY OF" games are listed after the "MYSTERY TRACKER" games!   I've played RC and the CP too!   I'm currently playing SHAOLIN: TALE OF THE JADE DRAGON STAFF.  Not my oldest unplayed game but it was purchased in 2010.

I have Shaolin: Tale of the Jade Dragon Staff as yet unplayed.  It comes later in my purchase history so must have gotten it as a DD.

I never noticed how it was alphabetized.  How strange and one has so many that start with mystery anyhow.  Easy to not find it.

Re: Oldest HOPA Game Challenge 8/21/2014-9/30/2014

Well, I did it - finished Azada as well as Dire Grove which was my next of the MCF games and got them done before the end of September.  Considering I had the mess with my water damage, brother coming and then my dad's passing, I'm pleased with my progess on my older games.  Loved Dire Grove and found myself shivering, so realistic was the snow and ice, and Azada was a challenge considering the timed puzzles.  Some of them I loved and breezed right through but had to use my orbs at end.  Had a version of the chinese checkers one when we were younger and could always get it to one but didn't want to take the time to figure it out.  Will post my next three games in a separate post.

Next 3 games in Oldest HOPA challenge to be completed by 10/31/14:

4. Hidden Mysteries: Civil War (5/25/09) - finished 10/5/14 - enjoyed it but glad it wasn't very long.
5. Haunted Hotel (7/22/09) couldn't finish - wouldn't save player name.
6. Forgotten Riddles: The Moonlight Sonatas (7/30/09) - finished 10/9/14 - ok, different take on HOG.

I'm taking the liberty of skipping Syberia (6/1/09) and Flower Paradise (6/20/09) since one is a LFG and the other an M3.  I know Syberia is a great game but don't have the mental toughness right now to devote the time needed and M3's are exempt from this challenge.

My next MCF game is MCF: 13th Skull CE (finished 10/4/14) and may try to work in a new game if I get the chance.  I have enjoyed playing and getting the older ones completed .

Yes it has been fun clearing up the old ones.  I think I'll get 5 of my 6 done.  I'll carry over the 6th.  I quite liked the Forgotten Riddle games, it's a nice riff on HO.  How are you doing Tee?

Congrats on AZADA and DIRE GROVE Tee!  I played the 1st AZADA but didn't particularly like it.  I tried DIRE GROVE but got totally lost -- even with the SG.  I so wanted to like HM: CW but the items were so tiny and the hints so few I never even bought it.  I've played your other two (and enjoyed them).

I'll be lucky to get 2 games finished this month -- and none are my oldest.,

As oscar said, how are you doing Tee?  {{{HUGS}}}

Re: Oldest HOPA Game Challenge 8/21/2014-9/30/2014

I'm doing fine, thanks for asking.  Last week was a little jumbled in my thinking, talking but think I had been on auto-remote for so long, my brain was confused when my routine changed.  Mom's needs are a little less stressful as she is mostly happy and stabllized for now so I find myself with less laundry to do, more time to relax and get back to my games.which will be good for me ~ just need to find a new normal, but I'm sure once the paperwork starts coming in, I'll be busy for a while.  I think that's why the older games work for me now as they are simpler, less challenging.

I know what you mean, lilyr, about Dire Grove, seemed to backtrap all over the place, needed a map, for sure, and used SG to bump me along.  Did get all the morphing items.  Did a little of HM:CW this morning and I like the interesting parts about the Civil War but will do it in little bits as the items are super tiny.  Think I will work on 13th Skull a little this evening; I remember the opening scene with the daddy vividly so must have gone in and out before, after being lured on to other games.  I'm making myself stay with these games once I start.

Re: Oldest HOPA Game Challenge 8/21/2014-9/30/2014

I think Dire Grove is my alltime #1 game.  My husband showed me BFG in the fall, and Dire Grove was the new game that Thanksgiving.  CEs were still 19.99 and there was no way I was paying that, but I saved my GCC for the SE.  I didn't realize how good it was since it was one of my first games.  When I replayed it this year I liked it even better than the first time.
It's for sure not my oldest unplayed game, but they're scattered between 3 computer and a portable drive, but I bought it quite some time ago.  Love Chronicles(?) The Sword and the Stone.  It's not doing much for me so far.  All the water is frozen, when you find some you have to put your rose in it and it unfreezes and you get another rose petal, so it's like a collectible but the scenery is all black and grey so the red roses really stick out, and they're always in the water so it's not much of a challenge.  It's easy to miss an inventory piece in the dark scenery and the hint isn't much help, it shows you a picture of a scene and advises you to go there.  For some reason I had to use a twig to get bark beetles onto some bark.  But the stick I had wouldn't work, it had to be a twig.  Then I put them on the trees that had a giant spiderweb between them and I guess they ate the trees but the spiderweb was still there so I had to use flint on a firestone to light my stick (guess the twig wouldn't suffice)  to burn the spiderweb.  Why did I have to kill the tree?  There was one delightfully creepy thing, though.  The witch's house had spider legs and it moved around.  I kept saying "Ewwwww" the whole time I was in that scene.  Really creeped me out.
I also started Adelantado Book 1.  Not liking it, either.  Unfortuneately I have the other 2 games, also.  There's 10 scenarios in the game, I've got the first 3 done.  I'm playing easy mode, I ran out of time about 20 seconds before I finished but it still kept going, let me finish, and it's letting me play the next scene.
I've played Syberia, I was pretty much totally lost the entire game.  I lived in the walkthrough.  If anyone plays LFA games there's a great walkthrough site called Universal Hint System, it's the kind that just reveals one (text) hint at a time.

No matter how much I complain, I'm grateful for all I have.
