Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

Wendy, hope you have a successful last five weeks.  Our fair starts here the end of September and although I no longer go (too much walking), I do miss the pineapple whip ice cream.  My DIL and her BFF go at least 3-4 times as she LOVES it (they take the kids once but once was always enough for me).

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

I was so bummed that I missed the weekend Gamehouse sale, I had a 75% off coupon I could have  used.  Then I got wondering if it was expired yet.  I checked the site andit didn't seem available so I wrote to CS about it and they sent me a coupon for a free game instead of 75% off.... and it works on a PE!!!!.  I've been thinking about Witches' Pranks, people at BFG seemed to like it but were upset that they didn't get to rescue all the frogs.  Then I noticed a game called Evil Pumpkin, but the only review I could find wasn't great.  Has anyone played either, or have another recommendation from GH?

No matter how much I complain, I'm grateful for all I have.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

I'm pretty sure someone reviewed EVIL PUMPKIN here.  Maybe stusue?

I found a review of WITCHES PRANKS on page 2 of stusue's reviews.  I still can't find the EVIL PUMPKIN review.  I know there was talk about the game here.

Wendy,  the GameHouse sale is still on.  If you check out each game it's already discounted 50%.  I've used my 25% discount coupons and got them even cheaper still.

I've played Evil Pumpkin but can't remember much about it and haven't posted a review here.  I may have posted something in this thread, though.  However, I got the PE with a coupon on 19 June so I must have really liked it as I got it after having already played it with my FunPass!  I'll check it out later when I find some time.  However, I did post a review here of Witch's Pranks.  You can check that out in my game review thread - I only recommended it if you liked the demo, as I wasn't overly impressed with it.

I much preferred Evil Pumpkin PE to Witch's Pranks - Frog's Fortune PE (which I didn't really like but everyone else seems to have loved it).

However, if you're interested in PEs, I can recommend 2 I've just played and which I'll be getting with some coupons - Queen's Quest - Tower of Darkness PE (not yet at BFG) and Lost Souls - Timeless Fables PE (I didn't like the BFG demo as the only way to get around is to use the map, which I didn't like, and so didn't get it but played it when it just arrived at GameHouse and really liked it - long bonus with collectibles and achievements) but you may already have that one.  GameHouse has also just released Living Legends - Frozen Beauty PE, which was out ages ago on BFG but which you might not yet have (I got the CE at BFG).

And every single coupon at GameHouse is valid for SEs AND PEs ... either monthly FunPass codes,  PCCs or CS coupons!  I think that's great.  However, even though there's no expiry date on CS coupons, they all expire.  I found out the hard way and now always ask for an expiry date when I get one, like this morning.

Oscar, if you want a nice challenging game, why don't you try Evil Pumpkin - The Lost Halloween.  It's a Point and Click Adventure game with very challenging gameplay and puzzles - no HOSs.  And no SG, no walkthrough, with only hints in the form of poetry to tell you what you need to do in the little puzzles.  Nothing is obvious.

There're also collectibles - tiny, eensy, weensy, minute candy (RL size) that you find in scenes as well as zoom-in scenes.  You use them to buy Halloween decorations for your garden.  However, once you've bought them in the store - you need different numbers of different candy to purchase each one - you go to the garden and work out where they all go.  You have to make note of what each one's name is so that you can find it in the garden.  That's definitely new!

It's also weird, weird, weird ... did I say weird?  From the reviews I found on other sites it's also apparently long and challenging.

It's really hard to describe this game as it's different from anything else I've played.  The closest I can think of is Haunted.  But it's fun!

GameHouse has the CE but I imagine BFG will only have it as an SE as, as far as I can see, there's no bonus chapter and, as I've already said, there's no SG.  But the extras that they do have - apart from the collectibles - are also weird.

If anyone wants to try it, you can either download the BFG survey ...

or the GameHouse demo ...

Follow the young Van Hallows down the rabbit hole into an exploration of the mystery of Halloween in Evil Pumpkin – Platinum Edition, a very weird and curiously exciting adventure game.

I've started playing Fantasy Mosaics 4: Art of Color.  It's a little bit like the World Mosaics free to play game.  You solve each color separately.  So far each board has only 3 colors.  Music isn't bad, I find it rather soothing.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

I finished Fright CE.  Anki said she really liked it and it was calling my name to play it and i was in between games in the Oldest HOPA challenge.  So why not, I asked myself.  I agree with Anki and I thought it was really good.  The main game has a proper ending and bonus section was not needed for the story.  (It expanded the story a bit and it took place at a earlier time).

CE has 34 $1.00 bills to find in order to use in the Gift Shop.  In the Gift Shop you can buy post cards which are 30 piece puzzles, Items to dress up your scarecrow and since game uses live actors, you can see some videos of the behind the scene ways game was made.   You can also replay the puzzles/HO scenes and it has all the usual stuff. wallpaper, music, drawing pad.  The bonus wasn't very long, but it was good.

I bought all the post cards and did all the puzzles and bought all the accessories to dress up the scarecrow.  I like the cowboy outfit the best.   Now if I can only get husband to dress up like a cowboy so easily.  HaHa!

So I want to maybe end up getting both games Witch's Pranks and Evil Pumpkin)  for Halloween.  One PE from GH with the coupon and the other SE from BFG.  Which one should I get SE and which one PE?

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

Sunshine, thanks SO much for finding what I posted about Evil Pumpkin!  I had a quick look but hadn't been able to find it. WTG!  The reason I couldn't find a review or any notes on the game is because I haven't played it yet.  I just demoed it and then got it with a PCC.

Wendy, BFG hasn't as yet released Evil Pumpkin - The Lost Halloween.  GameHouse released the Platinum Edition on 16 July and released the SE on 27 August.  However, as it's a really weird game I'd definitely recommend you try it before getting it as you may not like it.  Witch's Pranks is also different but is much more like a normal HOPA. Of the 2, I'd recommend the CE of Evil Pumpkin and the SE of Witch's Pranks.

However, I've just demoed another GameHouse new release that hasn't yet been released by BFG (it wouldn't play on my old laptop but now that I have my new one I can finally play it!) - Runaway Geisha Platinum Edition.  Apart from some really cool things in both gameplay and the whole setup, etc, it has the most amazing artwork I've ever seen in a game.  It's set in 1920s Japan and the artwork and music are appropriate.  The art director said that everything in the game is authentic, based on photos from that era, etc. (I watched the 3 short videos about the making of the game in Extras, which are really interesting).  I've just bought the game with my monthly coupon after only a few minutes of the demo as it's that good - I don't care how long it is, although it may be short as there's an achievement for finishing it in under 2.5 hours.  However, I had super slow loading times between scenes - a blue screen with a rotating circle thing for a loooong time, although that may have been due to my sister having incredibly slooooooooooooooow download times - instead of a few mins per game download each game is taking hours and hours to download.

I managed one HOP, which was a list with 2 or 3 interesting interactions - and beautiful artwork - which was quite challenging, as well as one puzzle, which I skipped as I couldn't get that last piece in the right spot and didn't want to waste time while I demoed it!  So the puzzles may also be quite challenging.

There are heaps of achievements - Bronze (?), Silver and Gold - and all the gold ones are surprise ones.  All the bronze ones, if I remember correctly, are finishing the puzzles within a certain time, like 1 minute, or finishing it without mistakes.  There's also one for completing the game without using the hint button at all.

There are also collectible origami of different shapes and sizes but I'm not sure if you do anything other than collect them as the number you've found is shown at the bottom of the achievements page but I couldn't find anything else, like if they're displayed somewhere.  You may only collect them for an achievement.  But they're still fun to find, in both scenes and zoom-in areas.

There's also a timer so you'll know how long you've taken to play the game.  I always like this feature as it saves me from having to keep track, which I always forget to do.
I recommend this one ahead of the other 2.

Re: Finish your games challenge - 2014

Thanks for the info, StuSue.  It hasn't made it much easier to decide, though.  I think I'll probably end up with the PE of Witch's Pranks because I love Shaman Games and the BFG SE version only has 2 frogs, the PE has 3 plus a bonus about the witch, it sounds like, so a good bit of extra play.  Finding tiny candies doesn't seem like a lot of fun, but what you do with them sounds interesting.
Funny moment.  I just went and looked at the screenshots of the game you said had beautiful artwork but I wasn't at all impressed.  "She thinks that's great artwork"  Then I looked again and I was looking at Queen's Quest, not Runaway Geisha.  I looked up Geisha, and I do love the artwork and want the game based on that alone.  But I think the SE will be good enough.  Well, as long as the SE ending is decent.  It kinda sucks that I can't do any demos while I'm traveling, when I do buy something, I'm just guessing.  I was much better about not buying this summer, I only used free coupons at BFG and just a little bit of money on sale games at Gamehouse.  Does Gamehouse have that $70 deal very often?  For 70 I'd get 12 PE versions of games to keep plus a year of free gaming, and I'd only have to buy 4 sale games to get another free PE game?   I asked them if I could suspend a Funpass membership for the 6 months I'm traveling and couldn't use it, they said I could, but I'm not quite sure they understood the question.  But even if I could only use it 6 months a year I'd still get the 6 free games for those other 6 months.  Sounds like a no-brainer.

No matter how much I complain, I'm grateful for all I have.
