Free to Play Games

The first free-to-play game on BFG was released 11 months ago.  I remember how just about everybody in CCC turned their nose up at the very thought of such a game.  Predictions were that they would never catch on at BFG, certainly never enough to make the Top 100 downloads list.

Two months later, a free-to-play game made by Elephant Games was released and not only made the Top 100 list, it made it to #4.

Since then, 2 free-to-play games have made #1: Farm Up, and Big Fish Casino.

Right now, the following free-to-play games are on the top 100:

#2 - My Singing Monsters
#3 - Big Fish Casino
#9 - Farm Up
#10 - Found: A Hidden Object Adventure
#11 - Dark Manor

Are these games available on FB?  I ask because today on the news I found out that every day in Germany 19 MILLION people are on FB, which is half the daily internet users in Germany and 1/4 OF THE ENTIRE GERMAN POPULATION!!!!  That shocked me, to put it mildly.  But it sure explains the big increase in online and FTP games if they are.

I also noticed today that there were only 2 threads started by a mod for the TGT - reviews and welcome thread, no technical thread!!!! - and not a word or lock on an entire thread devoted to bemoaning the changes at BFG, even though a lot of the posters mentioned that they expected to be locked.

I found one comment very interesting ...

Seems the Mods are actively working the FTP game forums
and very little in any of the other game forums, not even
to delete these off-topic posts. In my address book,
the only Mod listed on-line had not had a post in two
days. Not very comforting.

Re: Free to Play Games

I've only tried Found: A Hidden Object Adventure, and it didn't require Facebook at the time I tried it.  Don't know if things have changed.  People were complaining that they couldn't swap things with their friends and I think you need something like Facebook to do that.  But I don't know whether the trade with your friends function has been added.

I'm not surprised the mods are mostly in the free to play forums, that's where most of the conversation is.  Many of the people who used to post in the game forums have left in a huff, deleting their reviews and all thise posts.  Unless people are hitting the red ! I imagine all they're doing is looking through the technical threads.

I tried all of the above but I found them mostly boring. Dark Manor I found confusing and boring.

Re: Free to Play Games

I am playing FAIRWAY TEE TO PLAY but that's it.  I won't spend any RL money on it though.

Re: Free to Play Games

I think I tried 2 of the FTP games and found them boring straight HOGs so haven't even had the slightest urge to try any others.  They pale in comparison to the games you can buy and download so I have no interest in them.  But I'm sure a lot of people play them simply because they're free.

However, I'm not at all surprised that those 5 games are in the top 11.  I'm sure that every download of the games would count and how many people would have downloaded them just to try as they're free?  There's no other way to count them as no one purchases them.  Hence I'm sure that there will be more and more FTP games in the top 10.  I'm hoping the novelty will wear off, as least for the PC versions.  I'm sure the phone and android versions will continue as I'm sure they're perfect for those, although I have no desire to play anything on a tiny screen.  I don't even like playing games on my Netbook, and that screen is a lot bigger than a phone's screen.

The Top 100 only measures downloads.  Games stay at the top because not everybody downloads them when they first come out.  Some people have limits on the amount they can download, and wait to read the reviews; some don't like to demo too far in advance before they buy; etc, so the downloads get spaced out over a period of time.

You can tell the clunker games, they peak a day or so after release and then sink like a stone because the people who usually wait to download read teh reviews and decide not to bother.

With the free to pay games, they seem to fall into two groups:  the very popular, which make it to the top 10 and don't drop out of the top 20, and the ones that either never make the list or peak and sink.  Found, the game by Elephant Games, has been on the list for 39 weeks.

These games will get a boost up every so often when there's an update to them, as the developers write more code and expand the game.  They really should have their own list, but it's very interesting to see that today, at least, half of the Top 10 is occupied by free to play games.  No other type of game has been able to break the stranglehold the HOPA CE's have had on the top spots.

Re: Free to Play Games

I tried Dark Manor on my IPad and I just find everything to dark and to small.  Plus moving the screen around tends to make me feel a little woozy.  I can't play any of those 360 degree games.  I do play Fairway on both my iPhone and iPad.  I am quite addicted to that game and have spent I believe 20 bucks on golf bucks.  That buys a lot.  I was thrilled to see that you can now replay all the course you have finished with a new goal and trophies just like the daily courses and no golf bucks, just the challenge.  I still love the original fairway best though ( from Grey Alien). I have played that game so many times and it had better keep being compatible with the OS of my computers!

I've played a little bit of Candy Crush but I don't like it that much that I'd ever spend real $ on it.  The Singing Monsters looks cute.  Casino I would steer clear of.  I've never had a gambling problem but if I have a hard time leaving a game, hmm just one more board, just one more chapter could it be a problem? You never know and I don't care to find out!

Re: Free to Play Games

I like Fairway, I haven't spent any money on it and don't seem to need to.  I tried Found but didn't care for it too much and there were lots of complaints about needing to spend money so I ditched it quick.  A post in here I read today mentioned Farm Up, so I've spent a bit of the day playing it.  I'll be asking some questions about it tomorrow.  My Singing Monsters needs a solid internet connection, as does the Casino, so I haven't messed around with them yet.

No matter how much I complain, I'm grateful for all I have.

Re: Free to Play Games

Found- This was an ok game when it first came out. Pretty much straight HOG scenes but still fun to do if you didn't want to spend but a few minutes on something. Unfortunately most of us have reached a level where there are no more quests. They haven't done an update in awhile.

Farm Up- I liked this at first but the wait time for building things was ridiculous. I did not have a problem but several reported a glitch that if you didn't do something in a certain order either grandma or grandpa didn't show up.

Fairway- Tee to Play- Definately worth the time. I played almost the entire game without spending any money. Just about 3 courses left that I could not afford. That was ok since I have the two real games.

None of these three need an internet connection.
